The Fort Hood Killings... Crazy... or Not???

On Thursday, November 5th, 2009 a soldier at Fort Hood Military Base in Texas opened fire killing 12 people and wounding 30 others. The suspect in this case is Major Nidal Malik Hasan.

Hasan was reported to have been wearing his uniform when he opened fire, said Col. Steven Braverman, hospital commander at Fort Hood. Braverman said Hasan had received orders to deploy to Afghanistan.

The shooting occurred in a building called the readiness center, one of the last stops before soldiers deploy and one of the first places soldiers go upon returning to the United States.

Some of the victims were headed to Iraq or Afghanistan, said Col. Benton Danner.

A federal official said Hasan is a U.S. citizen of Jordanian descent. Military documents show Hasan was born in Virginia and has never deployed outside the United States. Read more of this story
here.

As it has been reported, Major Hasan is an American-born Muslim who was born and raised here in the U.S. He apparently was being deployed to Iraq and he was trying to get out or the military because he did not believe in the war and he did not want to have to go to fight in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Story taken from www.cnn.com

This made me think.... being a Muslim, I know that I would never be able to go to fight against my fellow Muslims either. To kill a Muslim is a grave sin in Islam. To kill innocent people is also a sin. What do you think about this tragic story? Do you think Major Hasan was taking a stand against fighting and killing more innocent Muslim families in Iraq? Do you think what he did was wrong? Did he have P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)? Can you understand his reasoning behind this???

  1. Of course it's crazy. Of course it's not OK! When is murder ever OK?! He's nothing more than a killer.

I wouldn't want to participate in the wars, but I would never join the military either.

  2. And he really just gives Islam and Muslims overall a bad name, again! I think we have had enough of this. What he did is not Islam.

  3. I just had a conversation about this with Ma about two hours ago. This is a really tricky thing because I can understand the man's reasoning behind it - it's not an easy thing going out into a war zone where you have to fight against the innocent. But on the other hand these are our brothers and sisters in humanity, how can I say these people deserved to die? I'm not even sure about this anymore because at the end of the day, 13 people are dead, 30 people are injured and people in Iraq are still getting slaughtered. Allah Know Best.

May the souls of the innocent rest in peace. May Allah's mercy shower down on the believers, the innocent and those who strive in His cause and may Allah guide us through this Dunya.

    Ameen

  4. There was no reason for him to harm anyone. He did not need to harm anyone else if he wanted out. There is no excuse, and this has nothing to do with Islam.

  5. Saalam,
As a non muslim, I realize and recognize that this act is not Islam. I also feel that the killing/murder of anyone regardless of faith is wrong. What happened to us all being a human family? These were people who were someones son, daughter, mother, father, etc. And how does he know that he did not kill another Muslim? This type of action is what causes people (who do not bother to read/research) to turn against Islam and make the atmopsphere that we all live in much more tense. What if someone had been watching him to see what a representation of Islam is and was actually thinking of converting/reverting to Islam? He was a Major so he had influence whether he knew it or not.
May Allah (swt) bless the families of those who have lost a loved one. And may we ALL continue to show each other love and understanding while keeping each other in prayer.

  6. I dont condone the man's actions but what does it mean its not easy to go and fight the innocent? I dont believe the US are going after the innocent in Afghanistan. I think they were after the Taliban and Al Qaeda that were and still are there. The innocent civilians are not meant to be casualties but im not dissagreeing there have been horrible soldiers that have harmed civilians with or without orders.

  7. If he didn't want to kill muslims, he shouldn't of join the military

    I hope he gets LIFE!

" to kill a muslim is a grave sin in Islam"

So does that mean that killing a non-muslim ( or non-muslims) is A-OK?

  9. To kill one innocent person is like killing all of humanity. Isn't this a saying of the Prophet, salAllahu alleyhi wa salam?

Of course he didn't want to go to Afghanistan, but killing other innocent people isn't the way to go.

In another article I read that he was teased about his heritage and religion and this is what set him over the edge, not just having to go and fight against Muslims.

  10. @NeverEver: Yeah, ma told me that. Apparently the guy had to deal with a lot of people getting at him for his religion and background.

  11. @Habibiti... "7 Major Sins?" I was not aware of that being an Islamic ideology... That is a Catholic belief if I am not mistaken.

  12. Its Christian, but murder isn't one of the 7 deadly sins. Unless you count wrath. Thou shall not kill is a commandment :)

  13. I'll admit, when I first heard the story, my first though was "oh, great, it had to be a Muslim"

Anyway, honestly, it seems like he snapped. Of course it was wrong. Obviously murder is always wrong, no matter what. It doesn't matter how scared or frustrated he was, or that he didn't believe in the war. However, it is possible that for some reason or a combination of reasons he really did go insane.

Anyway, I personally could never be in the military. Muslim or not, part of encouraging people to fight is to convince them that the enemy is total evil and that they are doing a great good that cannot be questioned. That kind of thinking, though I realize it's purpose, does not work for me.

  14. It is recorded in the Two Sahihs that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah salalahou alayhi wassalam said: Avoid the seven great destructive sins. ) The people asked, "O Allah's Messenger! What are they'' He said:
To join others in worship along with Allah, magic, to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, to consume interest, to consume an orphan's property, to turn your back to the enemy and flee from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything harmful to their chastity being good believers

the second one is murder right.and this case is of course not a just cause

  15. FINALLY! I haven't seen any posts about this on the "muslimah" blogosphere. Im really glad you guys posted something about the horrid events that occured at Fort Hood. Maj Hasan deserves life in prison for what he did. How could he kill 13 innocent people? I, a fellow muslim, totally condone his actions.

  16. 1. He had never been deployed before so PTSD wasnt the problem
    2. for a man with 15 years in the military going to war shouldnt have been an issue if he goes re enlist again again is his fault
he was a coward PERIOD and should be hung for his crimes

  17. I am shocked that you all even ask if it was "Crazy..or Not?" Of course its crazy! there is no excuse or justification!

  18. As salaamu alaikum brothers and sisters! About Fort Hood. First it is forbidden to kill in Islam accept by way of law and justice according to the Quran. and the Quran also says in Surah 49 verse 6 "if any news comes to you, verify it, less you harm people unwittingly in your ignorance and thereafter be in full regret for what you have done." Now the U.S. is at an open declared war with the Muslims in Afganistan, Pakistan, Iraq, etc. and this man was reported to have been against this war. this also happened on a military installation that was for the deployment and training of the U.S. soldiers to go overseas to join the war. he did not go to a park or school or library etc. and kill a bunch of innocent people. if any of our brothers or sisters are at war, then so are we. From the facts above how are you going to condemn this man. And you can't just go by the news. Get all the facts first, for you will be judged if you didn't seek out the truth. Allah (swt) knows best!
