To Niqab or Not to Niqab......that is the question

I have recently been thinking a lot about wearing niqab. I have worn niqab a few times here and there in the past but I have never made a commitment to it. The times when I did where niqab I have always felt very comfortable and at peace. I think niqab is absolutely beautiful and have a lot of respect for women who choose to wear niqab for the sake of Allah. May Allah reward them- ameen.

I don't personally think that NIQAB is fard(obligatory) but what I do know is that we should try to do things that the prophet(s.a.w.) and the companions did. Following this logic it only makes sense that we should want to do what the Ummul Mu’mineen, the wives of the prophets did. We can see examples of them observing niqab in the following hadiths.

Narrated by Aisha (RA) who said, "The riders would pass us while we were with the Messenger of Allah ). When they got close to us, we would draw our outer cloak from our heads over our faces. When they passed by, we would uncover our faces." (Hadith-Abu Dawud)
Narrated by Aisha(RA)"When (the Verse): 'They should draw their veils over their necks and bosoms,' was revealed, (the ladies) cut their waist sheets at the edges and covered their faces with the cut pieces." (Hadith-Al-Bukhari)

I do wonder how I will navigate in my day to day life i.e. work, shopping, eating out, etc. For now I'm still doing my personal searching to see what my decision will be.

Please share your comments and experiences be you a sister who wears niqab, who doesn't/wouldn't or anywhere in between.

Asalaamu alaikum,

  4. The issue on whether the Hijaab is fard is well known and is a dead issue. I think question nowadays is what the response should be for women who don't wear a hijaab. It's the same as one who doesn't pray..there's no hadd punishment but only nasihah.

  5. I think we are asking because some of us just want clarification to what she said. Whether it is or not oh well. Some of us are new (like myself) and get confused :)

  6. Well masha'Allah if you do decide to!
Personally, I see niqab as a sunnah and I don't necessarily plan on ever wearing it (but then again Allah swt is the best of planners)
Do you what you feel is right and don't feel pressured to wear it or not wear it.
May Allah swt guide you sister!

  7. Asalaamu alaikum sisters...
I recently begun wearing niqab. I wear it everywhere I go, except into my classes (I'm a full-time college student)...partly because I started the semester without niqab in class; but more importantly, one of my classmates is deaf and I know she reads lips. Other than that, I wear it whenever I leave the house.

My one piece of advice I really have is, if you decide to wear it, to know how you will respond when people ask you questions about it. Usually, when adults ask, I explain that the Qur'an tells men to lower their gaze, but since we live in a country where men do not do so, then I will cover my face. (They understand this better than saying that I'm wearing it for the sake of Allah, which is really first and foremost).

I still struggle with how to respond to children that ask about it. Little kids don't really understand "modesty," so I'm still not quite sure how to answer them. Any suggestions would be helpful, insh'Allah. :D

    Salaam,
    Aakifah

  8. Salaam,
My sister (who is Muslim) wore Niqab and I had no issues with it (I am not Muslim) just questions. I remember asking her one on one "will I ever see your face again?" Now please understand, I was much younger, I did not know ANYTHING about Islam (except the negative images shown on tv), and my sister and I have always had a joking way of talking to each other. So I knew that if I needed questions answered, she would be the one to answer them (and she still is - I love her soo much!)
Now - I feel that a person should wear whatever they need to wear that allows them to be as connected as possible to God/Allah (swt). If wearing Niqab is what one needs to do - do it! As a non muslim woman, I feel that it is my duty as a woman to defend the rights of sisters everywhere to practice their faith the way they see fit. So in closing - go for it! Niqab is beautiful because YOU make it that way by reflecting Allah in you!
    1000 Salaams to you all!!!!!

  9. Hi, i'm nurul

When i went to saudi (medina) for umroh, so many men trying to tease me. And then i decide to us niqab when we went to mecca. After that i felt very comfortable, even that, every women and men respect me as a moslema.

I think niqab make us feel comfortable, more close to Allah, and more keep your heart pure. Free from anything bad.

Really i want use niqab, but it's hard in here, in Indonesia. They always call niqabi is terrorist. Very different in saudi.

Haaaa, I wanna back to mecca huhuhu :(

  11. @ Co Coa "Now - I feel that a person should wear whatever they need to wear that allows them to be as connected as possible to God/Allah (swt). If wearing Niqab is what one needs to do - do it! As a non muslim woman, I feel that it is my duty as a woman to defend the rights of sisters everywhere to practice their faith the way they see fit."

I love this sister!! May Allah love her and grant her hidayah. Ameen.

I wear niqab and it has been the most enlightening decision I've made regarding my faith. (That's why when I read CoCoa's words "I feel that a person should wear whatever they need to wear that allows them to be as connected as possible to God/Allah (swt)" I had had tears in my eyes because that's exactly how I feel!

Wearing niqab is my muslim identity, the one I'm most comfortable with and so it is my right to hold on to this identity as much as possible.
Note: Belgium plans to ban niqab by summer. Please let's all make du'a this legislation fails to pass. Ameen.

  12. You have to have a man that is willing to be with you all the time,i face allot of harassment because my husband works and i live in a Punjabi(Sikh) and white town and i have to use the public transport. Its just awful, whenever my husband is not around people are not afraid to make remarks and walk away.Even the muslims here dont care for Niquabis, they think we are backward or something,i guess when they moved to Canada from Pakistan it 'enlightened' them.
