Rock It or Stop It: One Eye Niqab

There are many Muslimahs who wear hijab and niqab. Niqabs come in a variety of designs such as: ones with strings in the middle, multiple layers and sheer covers over the eyes. What about a niqab that also covers one eye?

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks(veils) all over their bodies(i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is the Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Quran 33:59)

So what you do think of the one eye niqab? Do you see any benefit in it? Have you worn one? Do you own any? Would you wear it? If yes, why? If no, why not?

  1. hmmmmm, if a muslimah actually WANTS to wear it then she can. Thing is i was told that if one eye is always covered, it gets weaker. but im not sure on that. And only being able to seeing out of one eye would give me a headache.

But people have to realise that this is a choice, not a compulsion. Many take it to the next level by saying the niqab is compulsory. what happens when people say that u can only expose one eye?

i wouldnt opt for this myself. I dont own one and i dont think i would. For me i see the whole 'covering the face' for me is suffocating for me (no disrespect). Plus id want to be distinguishable :P. But i have no problem if a sister would want to wear it.

  2. STOP IT! ...
although I agree 100% with CreativeSoul, I think we ought not promote that which is not compulsory in Islam.

as Salaamu alaikum Rahmatullah wa Barakaru, beloved sisters! keep up the good work. may Allah Subhanu wa ta'ala reward you with immense good.

  3. i cant walk around with one eye shut ... i swear i am amazed that women can walk around with only one eye . i tried doing that and its a fitnah for me. i cant even walk around my house one eyed smoothly without looking goofy. i have to put my hands out to gauge how far i am from something and i have to look down at the floor and walk so slowwwwww. and i cant see whats on the side of me so i have to exaggeratedly turn my body around from side to side to see my surroundings. if ur going a short distance like from one room to another ok sure but when u gotta get on the bus and go to the market n carry ur bags n make sure no one is stealing out of ur bag on that ghetto bus than no. and how can u drive a car with one eye? if there is a life situation that requires u use 2 eyes than u need 2 eyes. how many woman live a life style where they only need one eye?

  4. As Salaamu alaikum Rahmatullah wa Barakaru,
I myself DON'T wear Niqab. But I respect any sister that does. I find the Question "Rock it or Stop it" to be no different then the group of sisters who act as though we( sista's who don't wear Niqab) are lest then because we do not wear Niqab. I feel what ever a sister needs to do to Bring her closer to her Lord is the rite thing for her as long as it is incurred with Quran/Sunnah. May Allah grant us Jennah Ameen

  5. It clearly states in the ayah, that covering the face to only eyes ..or only one eye.. showing, is permissible. I've worn niqab in the past. I still wear it, on occasion. I don't get the fuss about one eye or both. If you want to wear niqab, it's between you and Allah, azza wajjal. He is the one you are doing it for!

  6. SubhanAllah,
how can anyone even discuss to stop something Allah (SWT) says is premissible!
    Fear Allah

Verily, though mankind and the jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another"

The "Rock It or Stop It" phrase simply means would you wear it or not?

  8. If a sister wants to wear niqab this way, go for it. I, however, think it would be too difficult to function if I only had one eye uncovered. There are plenty of niqabs that women can wear that are completely covering yet do not obstruct vision.

  9. I think its okay as long the woman is fine with it and its her choice then go for it!

  10. I don't think one can really function with just one eye. I'm sure over time one will be able to adjust. but quite frankly i don't see the necessity of it. and also it depends on which eye is covered. If it's the right eye that's covered and the left showing it can be seen as occult symbolism (all seeing eye). Not something I think any Muslim should associate themselves with but then again I just over analyze.LOL

  11. Ladies ladies ladies....
People can even function without eyes. Blind people :)?

I don;t think looking with just one eye would be a prob for any sisters that wanna wear it. I'm cool with it, but I don;t think I'd wear it though :). As long as a Muslim sister covers her aurat, I'm ok with it. its a BIG Alhamdulillah.

I really just don;t mind even if a sister put on a sack on her head and poke 2 holes for the eys. They's my sisters. Luv u all. mwahxs! :)

  12. Masha Allah, If its what you want to do. If I lived a sedetary lifestyle where I was a stay at home mom/ wife and rarely went outside then maybe I could consider the veil....but honestly unless you do believe it will bring you closer to Allah what the point in spooking people out. For me its to extreme but Insha Allah it benifits those who chose it.
    Great website, btw!!

  13. Salamu alaikum sisters,

The debate is really not whether one-eyed niqab is halal, mubah or haram; sunna or fard. The real issue is the right for muslims to choose which style of dress and covering to wear without compulsion or fear of any form of chastisement. Myself personally, I feel it is the individual's decision as every muslims is expected to know and understand their deen for themselves.

  14. Asalaam Alaikum,

I would say, Stop It. I feel that we should all go by the Quran, Hadith, and Sunnah to the best of our ability without the extra. but i guess there is a part that comes in about respecting other styles. but I wouldnt wear it.

  15. I don't get it. Why not just wear the eye screen? That can't be good for your eyesight. I think I get wearing niqab, but isn't this taking it a step too far? I would never prohibit it, like France is trying to do with the burqa, but if my daughter wanted to wear it, I would try to talk her out of it. No, I wouldn't; I would just roll my eyes!

  16. STOP IT... well at least for me.. i wear glasses and have a pretty bad eye sight, so imagine the trouble that it would be to cover one eye... But who can wear it, i found it pretty cool... :-D

  17. Rock it. If the sister's purpose is to obey Allaah, then she'll be rewarded for going that extra step. Myself, I leave both eyes uncovered.

Anyways, I don't understand how people are saying that niqaab can be extreme if it is something that the Prophet's wives and the rest of the Muslim women did. Forget that, all scholars say that covering the face is, at the very least, mustahab (many go further to say that it is fardh, which is the opinion that I follow). If you choose not to wear the niqaab because you don't adhere to certain opinions, that's fine, but please don't belittle any aspects of Islaam by saying it's extreme.

  18. Stop the one eyed niqab, rock the normal niqab with 2 eyes showing OR with both eyes covered. only showing one eye seems like it would make it hard to see and frankly, it looks so strange!
