Most of you have probably heard of all of the Real Housewives of blank shows. In case you haven't hey are reality shows that show the lives of mostly wealthy women, some married some not, in various cities such as Atlanta, New York and Beverly Hills to name a few.

Well, know there is something for us Muslimahs. Real Housewives of Philly Tales. The stories are posted on facebook and are fastly growing in popularity. It follows the lives of sisters living in Philly and the different things they go through. If you have read them we would love to hear your comments, if you haven't read them yet please add the sister on facebook and check them out. Before reading her disclaimer states :

The Mind of Man... Why You Should Wear Hijab...

We recieved an email from a reader who had the following to say about women who do not observe hijab:

If you are not covering:

a- I cannot differanciate between you and that non muslimah.

b- When I court you and find out later that you are a muslimah, I will not continue
with you because you're hipocrate.

c- You are causing passers by to trip and fall down as a result of looking at you. Just imagine how many accidents are happening because of you! Allah must you! judge you.

d- That man is going to divorce his wife just because he has seen your beauty. Allah must judge you.

e- That man is late to go to work just because he was watching your beauty. Allah must judge you.

f- That sick man is masturbating in front of you,just because he has seen your beauty. Allah must judge you.

g- That man has lost his abolution a result of your exposure in public. Allah must judge
you.

The Muslimah in the Mirror...

Many Muslimahs are soooo judgmental about one another. Usually, I have found that it is on such a superficial nature. It is usually based on opinions of hijab (or lack thereof), whether a sister plucks her eyebrows, wears makeup, wears nail polish, etc. Why do we not look at any other side of the coin? Many of us who are placing judgment on others are the same ones who don't know how to greet a house guest or how to associate with neighbors. These are the same people who only know one surah or don't know how to make wudu correctly. It has become an epidemic! We have to remember that we need to look within our own hearts before we even think about putting another woman in her place...

So, what do you think about this? Do you find that we judge each other on outerward appearance only? What is the obsession with the superficial?

'Tis the Season to Be Grinchy!!!

Okay, so every year around this time I get Christmas overload! It's like I will turn on the television to see a little CNN or reality t.v. (I know, I know... no judging!) and every commercial break is filled with Jingle Bells, snowmen and "miracles". Anyhoo, I start to feel just like the Grinch when people say in passing Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. I get to the point to where I just wish I could hibernate until December 26th. Which is one of my FAVORITE days of the entire year. Partly due the fact that it is the end of Christmas but really because it is the best day to go shopping!

I am really annoyed this year because as I type, there is some silly holiday boat parade going on behind my house. I mean these people go all out and decorate their yachts and blast Christmas carols this entire weekend. Sure, I wish I owned one of these yachts but I promise you that the real reason why it is annoying is the fact that the music keeps waking up my sleeping daughter who, by the way, will never have go through me lying to her about some old man who is going to come down the chimney bearing gifts. Really, I will never understand the reason behind all the hoopla. I love ISLAM!! No lies, no forced gift-giving and pressure... just the truth.

So, what do you like or dislike about the holiday season? Do you feel like a Grinch around this time of year???

It's the Year 1432!!! Happy New Year!!!

Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, "The number of the months according to Allah is twelve months (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day in which He created heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified".

These four months, according to the authentic traditions are the months of Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, has declared:

"One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab."

The specific mention of these four months does not mean that any other month has no sanctity, because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah.

In fact, every month, out of the twelve, is originally equal to the other, and there is no inherent sanctity, which may be attributed to one of them in comparison to other months. When Allah Almighty chooses a particular time for His special blessings, then it acquires sanctity out of His grace.

Thus, the sanctity of these four months was recognized right from the days of Sayyidina Ibrahim. Since the Pagans of Makkah attributed themselves to Sayyidina Ibrahim they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months.

In the Shariah of our Holy Prophet the sanctity of these months was upheld and the Holy Quran referred to them as the "sanctified months".

The month of Muharram has certain other characteristics peculiar to it, which are specified below.

Fasting during the month

The Holy Prophet has said:

"The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram."

Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet, the one who fasts in these days out of his own will and choice is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. The Hadith cited above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are most reward-able ones among the Nafl fasts i.e. the fasts one observes out of his own choice without being obligatory on him.

The Hadith does not mean that the award promised for fasts of Muharram can be achieved only by fasting for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit. Therefore, one should avail of this opportunity as much as he can.

It can be hard to find affordable maternity wear that covers properly and isn't expensive. This weeks find comes from one of our favorite websites, East Essence. We love this maternity/nursing abaya and it's only $39.

The embroidery on this abaya is fab and a nice way to add some color. However if the embroidery is to much for you it also comes in navy blue. It unzips to allow for easy nursing and comes in a variety of sizes and lengths.

MIA Wears Niqab on Red Carpet

MIA wore a colorful "overgarment" with the words "I love you" on the bottom, heels and a niqab on the red carpet at the Scream Awards. Many say that she may have worn the outfit because of the recent ban on burqa/niqab in France.

What is it you think you see when you look at me?

Why? Because I cover my hair?

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", I'm sure this is something that we have all heard before. The important question is do we realize how important it is and what it means to guard our tongues?

“Not a word is said except that there is a watcher by him ready to record it” (Quran 50:18). Every single thing that we say is recorded whether it's good or bad. On the day of judgment when we go before Allah(swt) the angels will read EVERYTHING that we said from the book of deeds. It can be so easy to get caught up in the day to day conversations we have, so much so that we don't realize how important what we say is or how it can effect us. When you say something negative about someone, or something that is not true we will be held accountable for it. We will end up wishing that we had never said it.

The Prophet(saw) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or keep silent”(Bukhari and Muslim).

Another hadith states "The best of all Muslims is one whose tongue and hand others are protected from(Muslim). Are we doing our best every chance we get to make sure that we are among the best? When we are around people talking about someone else do we join in or laugh along with them? Even if we don't say anything it's just the same as condoning it! If you hear someone talking about someone else don't be noisy and participate. Would you want someone to backbite and slander you? How would you feel if you knew that people were talking about you behind your back or spreading your business with others?

We also have to mindful of what type of language we use when we speak. The Prophet(saw) was not one who would abuse (others) or say obscene words, or curse (others)..."(Bukhari).

Things to keep in mind:

Make sure that we are concerning ourselves with the enjoining the good and forbidding the evil

Don't backbite, don't slander, don't use foul language and stop being nosey!!!

30 Mosques in 30 States is Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq’s Ramadan road trip across the United States.

Beginning August 11 in New York City, the two will spend each night of Ramadan at a different mosque in 30 states around the country. The two’s 12,000 mile route will essentially take them on an outline of the entire country and conclude in Dearborn, Michigan – home to one of the largest concentrations of Muslims in the country.

Muslims for the month of Ramadan are required to fast, going without food or drink from sunrise to sunset. There are an estimated 7 million Muslims living in the United States that come from a wide mix of ethnic backgrounds including African Americans, South and East Asians, Arabs and East Africans.

Each day during Ramadan, Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq will visit a different state and blog about the experience each night, highlighting stories about the people they’ve met, the mosque they prayed in and of course the tasty cuisines each place has to offer.

Hijabi Recessionista Find of the Week: Moroccan Caftan

Sometimes it can be hard to find colorful abayas and overgarments, so when I found this caftan I knew I had to get it. My caftan arrived a few days after I ordered it from eShakt i so the delivery was pretty fast. There's nothing worst than ordering something and having to wait forever to get it. It arrived in in a plastic bag looking like this.

Inside there was also a little black pouch with measuring tape. Insha' Allah I will order from them again and can use it to customize my order.

Here is what it looked like on.

It was $59 plus shipping and handling. I know this caftan is a bit pricey for the items we usually pick by I totally love it! A little bit about the caftan: The colors weren't exactly what I expected. I thought it was going to be more greenish and black than blue and royal blue. I still like it, it just wasn't the colors I expected based on the picture, even though it clearly says turquoise and royal blue on the website(doh!). It has pockets which are always useful and side slits at the bottom, so it will need to be worn with something underneath. I should also mention it comes in two other colors: yellow and a lime greenish color.

Rock It or Stop It: Niqab with Shades/Sunglasses

Alhamdulilah wearing niqab is beautiful and can truly be a test during the summer especially with the sizzling temperatures. On top of that the sun is out in full effect and can be a serious force to be reckoned with. It's not often that you see sisters rocking their shades when they wear niqab. So the question is should you wear shades/sunglasses with niqab?

Q: What do you think is a great age to get married? I was curious because I am 18 years old and I start University this fall as a freshman. I sometimes worry that I may not wait long enough to my wedding night. I do not know what to do. I am a very independent-minded girl and I want to to depend on my own for a while; however, I do not want to fall into sin and make any mistakes. I will be studying in a new city, so I do not know how the Muslim men are there. The ones I do know are not faithful at all. So, what should I do? Also, what could I do to keep sin away form me and off my mind?

A: Shukran for your question Sherika. Marriage is very important and alhamdulilah it completes half of our deen. We understand the desire to complete school and be an "independent" woman, however, if you feel that you would fall into sin, we advise you to get married as soon as possible. If you have found someone who would be a good match for you, you should marry them if you feel you would not be able to wait until you get married. Three things that you rush into to are marriage, shahaadah and burial.

If you do decide to get married, it is also important to mention that marriage is a major decision and it's not something to be taken lightly. If you get married you will have to be in school (which is a lot to handle by itself), be a wife and maybe even a mother. This would be a lot for any woman to deal with especially a young woman such as yourself.

We advise that you make istakhara prayer for guidance on whether or not to get married soon and also to fast in order to help you lower your gaze.

"O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power." (Bukhari)

Muslim Woman to Look Up to: Hayat Charkaoui

Alhamdulilah this is our first Muslim Woman to Look Up to feature. Asal Tamimi submitted this sister for our first feature.

This is what she had to say:

She has been practicing since the age of 15[she is now 23], and is always doing what she can to give dawah and help others. She always advices according to the haqq [truth] of the Quran and Sunnah. She gives zakat [charity], completes her five daily salahs [prayers], regularly attends Jumah [friday] prayer, dresses modestly, and during Ramadan she spends longs hours in the masjid masha' Allah. Hayat is a very polite and well mannered individual, even when she is put in a position where she is not being treated in the same respect. She will [always] remain composed for the sake of Allah SWT and deal with the situation the best she can, masha' Allah.

For me personally, Hayat has played a big part in helping me practice the deen, she encouraged me to start wearing my hijab and taught various ways of wearing it, she gave me advice to help me with my fajr [early morning] prayer, and she's always there for me when I have a question, and encourages me to seek confirmation of things from the Quran and various hadiths. Those are just a few things she has done for me. I would be here all day if I were to write them all! I definitely believe Hayat's devotion to Allah (SWT) and the deen deserves to be featured!

The Third Side of the Coin

Prologue :

The trend started 15 years ago, but at that time it was limited to very needy families whose women had to do manual, factory work in small industries. The more educated, but financially troubled ones opted for teaching. The upper class usually did their learning and job abroad. Just 10 years ago it was noticed that 50% of the girls bagged top positions in matric board exams. With each passing year the percentage increased. Gradually the same batch of matriculate girls became toppers in intermediate exams. Girls ruled education everywhere and high hopes were pinned on them to progress further- while being offered a freedom of choice by their families. And now, in this 21st century, from doctors to MBAs, door to door sellers to front desk officers, cultured bankers to pilots, hardly any field is left untouched!
On the front this seems like good progress, but if we look at the bigger picture, aren’t we missing something? A society full of female workers- will it be an Islamic society? Or a balanced one? Even the broad minded, completely accommodating West had reservations to the Feminist movement launched for equal rights of female folks esp. for the working women. In an Islamic country where a woman cannot head an organization, a female leader was elected PM twice and same goes for Bangladesh, but do we see such example in US or UK elected govt.?Let’s dive deep into the pool of emancipation surrounded by an Islamic state.
The Story ~!~

Most girls pass out of their Grad schools, studying in co-education, confident and focused about their careers and future life. Since a lot of money has been spent on their graduation expenses, they want to make it up to their parent’s financial efforts, at least before their marriage. They strive hard for a job and quickly land a reasonable one. With the first 3 salaries, comes a brand new mobile, a drastic change in wardrobe, from the push-cart stock to branded cotton, and the drawing room furniture goes on the verge of a make-over to invite office colleagues. After the firstyear the girl decides she can no longer wake up early for office van or come back late in taxis. A new 800CC car is brought on installments. 2 years pass by and the girl starts investing in bonds, certificates and plots etc., to rent or buy later. The fulfillment of her small dreams, keep egging her to pin hopes on higher ones.
2 more years down the road and she starts having status clash with the residents of her middle class locality. A flat in the posh district becomes her target. With the easy house-financing offered by banks and a bank balance of 4-5 lacs she could actually sell their house and start living in a flat. And then one day they move out, never to look back to their locality or neighbors - sometimes even relatives. Everything becomes a ‘story of the past’- a skeleton in the closet- that is securely looked with the key thrown away.

She is now 26. The proposals start flooding in and her mom starts getting conscious of her age factor. The girl however, had been dreaming of a grand living and a status uplift by marrying in a higher class, but their family was still shackled by their backgrounds and the posh proposals could sense the difference just by talking to her parents and eventually backed out. Soon she got married to an upper-middle family, against her wishes. The guy earned slightly above her pay-scale and owned a family car. From a flat that she owned with the master bedroom to herself she went into a joint family system with a double bedroom as her only property! Feeling claustrophobic and pressurized, she now applied for a better job. Backed by her experience, she started earning more than her husband. Their status difference became more conspicuous and so did her frustration for not getting her dream life. They could not yet afford a maid and she did not have time for household chores after her very demanding new job. She expected her husband to help her with it or at least look after his personal things himself.The joint family pressures were building up from all around as eyebrows got raised at the couple’s division of homework. They decided to move out. Another apartment bought on lease by her after selling out the property she had been investing in since the past 6 years. This meant total rule on her part. She owned the house and the bills were shared.
Five years down the road, 2 kids had bounced in their lives and life took an ugly turn when her husband lost his stable yet non-managerial job, as a result of downsizing. She was however progressing gradually, becoming the HR manager of her company, being offered a brand new 1000CC car and other fringe benefits. On the other hand, while going on job hunts through websites, her husband became a domestic father. In the absence of an all-time available mother, the children became more attached to the father and also spoilt to some extent. She considered herself almost free of child rearing duties as she was financially supporting the household and expected her husband to adjust to this role-reversal.
After 2 long years, he finally got the job. From then on, they never had a good night’s sleep. Who was to look after the children? Who would provide pick and drop? Look after their studies? Who to leave them to? She had become pretty dominating by then. The children grew up seeing a passive decision power of their father, which earned him their sympathy and little respect. While the dominating and alienating attitude of their mother earned her neither their respect nor sympathy- even though she toiled each day as a woman in a man’s world; only for them.
A woman who had to face office politics at work simply because she was hard-working and intelligent enough to take the managerial positions from right under the nose of senior colleagues;
A woman who compromised her femininity by choosing to be a daughter who supports her father and family;
A woman who traded her dreams by marrying below her expectations; A woman who lived in a joint family system, supporting her husband financially and still opting for motherhood.
Yet, a woman who only lapsed on the designated duties of a full-time mother? What went wrong?
Who was to lose and how much? What was there to lose in the heavy bargain?
A girl who compromised the best days of her to life to secure a bright future, got what in return? A domesticated husband, detached children and her own frustrated soul? Was this the future she dreamt of?
Post Script
As Muslims, we all claim to keep away from the forbidden boundaries of ‘haram’, but what about the ones that are not so clear? That are left on our discretion to draw and abide by? Man and woman were not created equal and are not designated with equal tasks by the Almighty. It is not forbidden for them to work shoulder to shoulder with men (as the wives of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) did help the Sahabas in gathering Ahadith and Sunnah). But at the same time it is not preferred. That boundary is left to us. Extending it, stretching it by emphasizing that Shariah does not forbid it “It’s not haram”, “It’s the need of the hour for a working couple to live in times of recession”- is actually playing with the boundaries given to us to accommodate our needs and wants.

Humans- male or females- are drawn towards the luxuries of life; grand living, freedom of choice. We are also prone to greed and corruption, mentally and monetarily. When Islam talks about or promotes a woman working safely in the boundaries of her home, it actually promulgates a satisfied female who is apt for this job more than man; a woman who is the Queen of her Empire- everyday, not getting disrespected by males in the ugly world outside.Islam talks about the woman’s whole life. It does not emphasize temporary pleasure, in this case, the facilities she enjoys as a happily earning female, working shoulder to shoulder with men and changing her future lifestyle to accommodate her aspirations.
One woman, 10 women and then 60% of the population is enough to bring about women revolution in the country that has promoted a hi-fi culture ranging from club memberships to mobile late night packages for women, lawn extravaganzas, shopping malls, face uplift treatments, brand culture, kitty parties etc. to flaunt your stuff at. It has also promoted freedom of youth in a negative way because of unattended upbringing and high media influence. One woman, one mother and one thought changes all!As Napoleon Bonaparte says, “Give me a good mother, I will give you a good nation” and “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”. A mother plays a great role in shaping the future of a nation. It is also said that, ‘if you educate a mother, you educate the whole nation’.
I am not against an educated, working mother, but doing job for the sake of your careers and actually believing that focusing on child nurturing will rust away your talents; reasoning that quality time wins over quantity time while thinking your kids will be cared for by their nannies till you return home is sheer folly! The channels they switch on, the mobiles they have, the feelings they hide when moving towards adolescence can only be monitored with your undivided love. Remember, you give birth to your children not your products or services. Your parent company can fire you, but you can’t abandon your kids. Your job evaluation gives you an A+ rating, but your children judge you negatively in the long run. Is that all worth it?

Muslim Women to Look Up to: Hazrat Saudah

It's important that as Muslimahs we have our own role models to look up to. We don't look to the latest stars, celebrities, models and politicians for our examples. Instead we look to the Muslimahs of yesterday and today. We are beautiful, strong, intelligent women with voices to be heard. Always have been and always will be. We are the mothers, the teachers, the listeners, the supporters and the backbone of our Ummah.

Her name and lineage

Hazrat Saudah (Radi’Allahu Anha) belonged to the tribe of Aamir Bin Lawi which was a branch of the Quraysh. She was the daughter of Zam’a, son of Qais. Her mother’s name was Shamoos who belonged to the Banu Najjar tribe of Medina.

Her youth

She was initially married to Sakran, son of Amr who was a nephew of her father. She and her husband embraced Islam together in the early days of Prophethood. Because of the tyranny and repression of the Quraysh towards Muslims, Hazrat Saudah (Radi’Allahu Anha) and her husband joined the party of immigrants leaving for Abyssinia. She returned to Makkah after residing in Abyssinia for a number of years. On returning to Makkah, her husband Sakran passed away.

Marriage to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)

After the sad demise of Hazrat Khadijah (Radi’Allahu Anha), the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was greatly grief-stricken. Through a number of people, the marriage of Hazrat Saudah (Radi’Allahu Anha) was decided and her father gave her in marriage to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) for dower money of 400 Dirhams. It is narrated that Hazrat Saudah (Radi’Allahu Anha) saw a dream during the lifetime of her former husband, Sakran, who gave the interpretation that he would die and she would be wedded to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). This dream came true.

Qualities

Hazrat Saudah (Radi’Allahu Anha) was the most obedient of all the wives. On the occasion of the last pilgrimage, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) had desired that his wives stay in their homes after his death. Hazrat Saudah (Radi’Allahu Anha) obeyed this order to the extent that she did not leave her home even for another Hajj saying, “I have already performed Hajj and Umrah and hence I shall stay on in my home as per orders of Allah and His Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).”

In alms-giving and generosity, she was above all the wives except Hazrat Aisha (Radi’Allahu Anha). She earned from cleansing of hides and skins and spent lavishly in the way of Allah on deeds of virtue and righteousness.

She also had a good sense of humour. At times, she walked in such a way that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was amused. Once she said to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), “Last night I prayed in your company but your bowing became so prolonged that I feared my nose had started bleeding and I caught hold of my nose for a long time. This amused the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and he smiled.

Q: Salaam girls!!!! Hope you are both doing well (and surviving this horrible Southern heat!) . For the last year or so I have been preparing for the Peachtree Rd Race this coming Sunday(my first timing running it and I am scared out of my mind 6 miles is a long way!). I am by no means I skinny athletic person but it was a personal challenge I wanted to do. This weekend I spent hours upon hours searching for an outfit that would not only be modest but somewhat cute (I feel self esteem plays an important role in our lives if we look sloppy then our attitude will be sloppy ;-). I finally decided on a flared yoga pant with a tennis skort over it with a turquoise top. I was just wondering if ya'll could do something on athletic wear for outside the home or even working out in general (be it at home, the gym, etc.). When I first converted I never imagined I could go running outside b/c I had nothing to wear that was appropriate (gym clothes are def not modest! LOL) Anyways, I just wanted to give ya'll the suggestion.

A: Alhamdulilah!!! We are doing are best to stay cool in this heat. = ) We are so happy that you asked/suggested this. One, because it's important that we know that just because were Muslimahs doesn't mean that our lives stop. If you are a new shahaadah it's important to know that observing hijab doesn't limit your life. If anything it enables you to be dressed appropriately so that your comfortable to swim, run and be active. Two, because it's important that we stay fit and healthy. A good website to check out is FitMuslimah. There are lots of articles, recipes and events on this website to help support and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Your outfit sounds super cute and modest. Here are a few items that can work for every Muslimah depending upon what you would be most comfortable in. The race is today and insha' Allah you do well and stay cool in the summer heat (it's supposed to be 88 degrees today).

July 1st Remember Marwa al-Sherbini on World Hijab Day

If you haven't heard of this case by now (which is entirely possible due to subjectivity of the global media), it's one of heartbreak and injustice. As the story goes, Marwa al-Sherbini was a pharmacist who lived in Germany with her husband and three-year-old son. Last year, she was at the park with her son and was verbally abused by a Russian living in Germany (Alex W.). She asked him to give up a swing for her son, to which he responded by calling her an "Islamist", a "terrorist", and a profanity.

Following the incident, al-Sherbini sued and won against her attacker. On July 1, 2009, however, another hearing in the case took place. Just as Mrs. al-Sherbini was going to testify against Alex W., he lunged at her and stabbed her 18 times in front of her family. Yes, you read that correctly, 18 times. Her husband Elwi Okaz attempted to protect her in vain and ended up accidentally being shot by a security guard in the midst of the chaos. Many German courts, including that in Dresden where the attack occurred, have no security checks at their entrance.

The outrage in her native Egypt was profound and brought together people from completely different sides of the Egyptian social spectrum. The case has united Egyptian bloggers, who typically cannot agree on anything. Her funeral was attended by members of parliament, a representative on behalf of Egypt's Coptic Christians, a minister, and thousands of working class citizens. Her story became known as that of the Hijab Martyr.

Was Marwa al-Sherbini brutally murdered because she wore the Islamic Hijab? We may never truly know, but given the social and political climate in Europe, there's a very good chance the constant dehumanization of Muslims was a factor. The recent electoral gains of fanatical Far Right groups in Europe who campaigned on the basis that Islam was "backward" and had no place in Europe testify to this. More recently, Muslim women all over the West were put at ease knowing that French President Nicolas Sarkozy was on a mission to liberate us by banning the Burqa.

Many Muslim pundits have asked the "What if it was an X person killed by a Muslim instead?" question. That question is pointless, and it will not bring any justice to Marwa al-Sherbini. Her story is unique and compelling in itself that we do not need to bring other in cases. The media coverage initially was relatively disappointing and would have been much more intense given different circumstances. However, that doesn't mean we should obsess over the attention given to the case and forget the actual issue at hand. I'm going to out on a limb and say that Alex W. was a xenophobe who probably was more or less an isolated case, even though the political climate in Europe stands to produce countless other Alex W's.

Marwa al-Sherbini's message is that of humanity and perseverance. She wasn't about to let one fanatical maniac prevent her or her family from achieving their dreams and hopes. The countless Muslims who have come to praise her cause are disregarding what she stood up for by making blatant and sometimes racist comments about Germans or non-Muslims in the west. Her husband was visited in the hospital by Stephan Kramer, the general secretary of the Jewish Council in Germany. His statements about the situation did more justice to the case than those of Muslims who chanted "Death to Germany", among other slogans.

"You don't have to be Muslim to oppose anti-Muslim behavior, and you don't have to be Jewish to oppose anti-Semitism," said Kramer. "We must stand together against such inhumanity."

On July 11, a public memorial organized by local civil rights groups was held at Dresden City Hall to honor Marwa al-Sherbini. It was attended by over 1000 people, including state officials and many Germans who were appalled by the events. Tobias Weidlich, 29 who was joined by his two young daughters, expressed his shock, "The brutality and horror of this crime is unbelievable," he said. A placard held at the memorial read "Racism Kills".

Indeed, Marwa al-Sherbini took a stand against racism. Moreover, the actions of Alex W. and those who take part in racist attacks seek to instill a fear in the victims and in society, a fear so intimidating that it will stop us from addressing such problems. Alex W.'s attack wasn't just against Muslims, but against all decent and civilized people, and the response shown at the memorial proved that intolerance will not triumph.

The question now remains: how do we as a society ensure that Marwa al-Sherbini's son grows up in a world free of the hatred that stole his mother from him?

May Allah bless Sister Marwa and give her family ease during their time of hardship. May he reward her for her actions and for her martyrdom. Ameen.

Saudi Women Will Breastfeed Men If Not Allowed to Drive!?!?

In the Los Angeles times, there is an article about Muslimahs taking a stand on not having the ability to drive by saying they will breastfeed their drivers!!! I absolutely have to share this with you all so let us know what you think!

Many were stunned when Saudi cleric Sheik Abdel Mohsen Obeikan recently issued a fatwa, or Islamic ruling, calling on women to give breast milk to their male colleagues or men they come into regular contact with so as to avoid illicit mixing between the sexes.

But a group of Saudi women has taken the controversial decree a step further in a new campaign to gain the right to drive in the ultra-conservative kingdom, media reports say.

If they're not granted the right to drive, the women are threatening to breastfeed their drivers to establish a symbolic maternal bond.

"Is this is all that is left to us to do: to give our breasts to the foreign drivers?" a Saudi woman named Fatima Shammary was quoted as saying by Gulf News.

Obeikan argued in his decree that if the women give their drivers their breast milk, the chauffeurs would be able to mingle with all members of the family without having to worry about violating Islamic law. Some Islamic scholars frown on the mixing of unmarried men and women. Islamic tradition, or hadith, stipulates that breastfeeding establishes a maternal bond, even if a woman breastfeeds a child who is not her own.

Drawing from the cleric's advocacy, the women have reportedly chosen a slogan for their campaign that translates to, "We either be allowed to drive or breastfeed foreigners."

The current driving ban applies to all women in Saudi Arabia, regardless of their nationality, and it's been a topic of heated public debate in recent years.

The ban on driving was unofficial at first but was introduced as official legislation after 47 Saudi women drove cars through the streets of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, in 1990 in an attempt to challenge authorities.

The incident brought harsh consequences for the women, who were jailed for a day and had their passports confiscated. Many of them were said to have been forced to leave their jobs after the driving protest.

Still, every now and then, reports of Saudi women driving in defiance of the ban emerge in the media.

Two years ago, 125 women in Saudi Arabia signed a petition that called on the Saudi interior minister to lift the ban.

One of the Saudi female signatories, Wajeha Huwaider, posted a video of herself driving on YouTube in a direct appeal to the Saudi authorities to allow women to drive.

"For women to drive is not a political issue," Wajeha said as she sat behind the wheel. "It is not a religious issue. It is a social issue, and we know that many women of our society are capable of driving cars. We also know that many families will allow their women to drive."

Keeping Your Marriage Fresh With the "Five Senses Rule"

"And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect."

(Quran: Ar-Rum 21)

1. Sight- Always beautify yourself. Make sure your clothing is nice, your hair is done and your makeup looks just right (if you wear it).

2. Hearing- Always greet your hubby with a sweet voice and leave any bad news for later. Never speak in a loud, boisterous manner. Don't try to engage is gossip or trivial conversations. Keep positive, Islamic conversations going and things that your hubby has interest in. Leave the other stuff for your girlfriends.

3. Touch- Make sure your body, your bedsheets are nice to the touch. This could mean shaving your legs or using a nice moisturizer. Using downy softener sheets or changing to Egyptian cotton or satin.

4. Smell- Never have a bad smell in the house. While you cook, be sure to open the windows and afterwards be sure to light a candle, burn oils or incense, or spray a room freshener. Also, change your clothes if you have been cooking meat or onions. Make sure you keep up your hygiene and make a habit of brushing your teeth and spraying perfume on the back of your neck, behind your ears and any other place you can think of before bed. ;-)

5. Taste- Try new recipes for variety and master the dishes he enjoys the most. Be sure that dinner is always ready before he makes it home. No man likes to come home on an empty stomach only to find nothing waiting for him on the stove.

Q: I was recently told by a friend of mine that Islamically women can't be judges in a court of law. If this is true what is the reasoning behind it? And what are the rulings regarding the Law Enforcement field? Is it permissible (Islamically) for Muslimahs to be attorneys, judges, police officers etc?

A: Shukran for the question Shereece. The most important part of you question is asking from the Islamic ruling on it. This would mean that your question would be based upon Sharia (Islamic law). Sharia is not a legal system like any other present day system. You would not have seen a judge, plaintiff, jury, etc. during the time of the Prophet(saw). Whether they were male/female. Most Islamic countries do not have Sharia in place and practice other forms of legal systems where religion and state are separate.

Some say that it is forbidden based on the following hadith.

It was narrated that Abu Bakrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (saw) heard that the people of Persia had appointed the daughter of Chosroes as their ruler, he said: “No people will ever prosper who appoint a woman in charge of their affairs.” Bukhaari (4425).

Because of this some say that women are not not allowed to be judges/hold positions of power. However, Muslimahs have held many positions of power and influence throughout history to date. To name a few Muslim women who have held or are currently in positions of power.

In March 2007, the Supreme Judicial Council of Egypt, the country's highest court, chose 31 women to be judges, 30 of whom now work at courts around Egypt.*

Muslimah Hair Care

" I think I'm gonna do my hair tonight"

" Do your hair?"

" Yeah, I'll probably wash it and do something different to it tonight"

" Wait, why are you doing your hair when nobody sees it?" or now that I'm married "why are you doing your hair when nobody sees it but your husband?"

side note- last time I checked my husband would be the most important person who gets to see my hair!

This is a conversation that I've had many times with co-workers, classmates, etc. This got me thinking about the fact that I've never seen info about hair care for Muslimahs. There is plenty on hijabs but nothing on what's underneath them.

This post is also inspired by this weeks Ask M2M question about hair care. Particularly if you have a kinky/curly hair texture and how to maintain your hair with having to make wudu and ghusl all the time. So here is a quick product review/products I use for my hair to help keep it healthy.

Kinky Curly Custard and Knot Today Conditioner ***

This used to be my favorite hair product. This product made my hair very manageable and would last for about a week at a time. I think it works best for air drying and twist sets. I would twist my hair down to my head, let and dry and then untwist it. It made very nice waves that would last for about a week as well. The only downside is it takes a while for the product to dry and you have to make sure to use the right amount. You don't want to over do it or you will end up with flaky hair.

Aussie Shampoo & Conditioner(Moisturize) and 3 Minute Miracle ****

I happen to love this line. It's not expensive at all and easy to find. You can get it everywhere from Walmart to your local grocery store. I like the 3 min miracle conditioner, I do that with a shower cap and it leaves my hair super soft. I also use the shampoo and conditioner because they give my hair the moisture it needs.

Curly Custard **

I have used the curly custard from this line. I love the way it smells. This product for me was not my favorite. It could be because of my hair texture it didn't give me the results I like. With that said I have seen many hair tutorials on YouTube where it works for some and looks fabulous, just not my favorite. If your interested in this product they have samples for sale on the website so you try it and see what products work best for your texture.

Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner ***

I use this product as a leave in conditioner and it works great. It gives my hair a very soft texture and a nice curl pattern. I like this product because it doesn't take a lot and it last for a while. This can be found at your local drugstore or any beauty supply store. It used to come in a small tub but I've only seen it in the squeeze container recently.

Hair Rules ****

This is my new favorite product. I love how it makes my hair feel and the results that it gives. It doesn't take a long time to dry but it still holds my curls under my hijab. The website often has sales i.e. two for one and you can buy smaller containers to try them to see if you like the product.

Shea Butter ****

Nothing is better than shea butter. It's a perfect moisturizer and you can use it for any type of styling. You can find shea butter everywhere and it is a def must have for every Muslimah!!! You can also use shea butter on your body as a wonderful moisturizer.

Q: I'm an African American Muslimah and i am always at odds wit my hair when it comes to making ghusl and wudu on a regular basis .. i was wondering what would be the best hair style for me to keep my hair healthy as it endures the constant wetness?

A: Shukran for you question Yasirah. Unfortunately hair is not something that we talk about often but it is definitely an important topic worth covering. If you have curly, kinky or wavy hair texture it seems that a natural hair style(meaning no chemicals/straightening) may be the best and most practical way to go. We say this because between wudu and ghusl your hair is going to splashed or maybe even drenched in water everyday.

Natural styles are easy to manage and you don't waste a lot of time on straightening your hair just to have it snap right back after it gets wet. You will also see the health of your improve as well as the length, insha' Allah. Some natural options are:

A: Shukran for asking this question Tahirah. We do have a tendency to get comfortable with family members and think that it is okay to uncover in front of them as long as they are family. You don't have to cover in front of any man who is your mahram. Mahram is one with whom marriage is permanently unlawful.

This (permanent prohibition of marriage) is established in three ways: By kinship, foster relationship and relationship through marriage. Your brother in law is lawful for you in marriage and does not become your mahram through marriage.

Forbidden to you (for marriage) are: your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father’s sisters, your mother’s sisters, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your foster mothers who gave you suck, your foster milk suckling sisters, your wives’ mothers, your stepdaughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom you have gone in — but there is no sin on you if you have not gone in them (to marry their daughters), — the wives of your sons who (spring) from your own loins, and two sisters in wedlock at the same time, except for what has already passed; verily, Allaah is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful. [al-Nisa’ 4:23]

To sum it up here is a list of men who would be a mahram for a women:

your father in law

your sons, grand sons...as they go down. ( i.e, great grandson) those by blood or breast feeding

your father, grand father, as they go up. (i.e, great grand father..etc) those by blood or breast feeding

your brothers, half brothers (related by blood) and your brothers from breast feeding and nephews as they go down

your uncles- great uncles (mother's or father's brothers i.e, maternal and paternal) those by blood and those by breast feeding

your father in law- your son in law - the son of your husband.

So to answer your question Tahirah, yes, you do have to wear hijab in front of your brother in law. May Allah make it easy for you - ameen.

Totally love this skirt, found it while shopping at Walmart. Saw it out the corner of my eye and thought I would check it out. Much to my surprise once I got close enough to see the price tag, $12!!! Rock It or Stop It: One Eye Niqab

There are many Muslimahs who wear hijab and niqab. Niqabs come in a variety of designs such as: ones with strings in the middle, multiple layers and sheer covers over the eyes. What about a niqab that also covers one eye?

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks(veils) all over their bodies(i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is the Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Quran 33:59)

Ask M2M: One or Two Piece Hijab???

Q: I have a question about Hijab! I find it easier to wear the one pieces instead of the actual scarves. I'm still learning how to actually wear the scarves but because I'm always in and out i feel its easier to just pull over the one piece hijab and wear it like that. I'm 20 years old and i usually see most Muslimahs with scarves and not the pull over type that's easy for me. My question is, is the pull over hijab too young? Is it mostly for younger Muslimahs? I don't wanna make it look like i don't wanna take out the time to put on a real scarf, but to me a pull over hijab is easier. Thanks for the help sisters

A: Shukran for the question Yasirah. As long as you are wearing hijab properly than that's all that matters. If you like the one pieces and they work for you then keep wearing them. We don't think that they are for a certain age group, as long as you are comfortable you can continue to wear your one piece hijabs in every single color you can get your hands on.

Can a Dog Be a Muslimah's Best Friend???

Okay, ladies... so we've all seen at some point or another this trend of having a little "teacup" chihuahua, yorkie, pomeranian, etcetera... You can dress them up in little cute outfits and put them in your purse and take them for walks around the park or even take them to the mall with you, right? They are so cute and cuddly and a great companion to keep you company, right???
WRONG!!! As cute as these little doggies are, we must remember that we, as Muslims are cautioned not to keep dogs as pets.

This does not mean that we should love the dog. It is perhaps the indoctrination of the Western culture that 'The dog is Man's best Friend'. The theory that 'dogs are very dependent on Human affection' is a myth - culture and custom has helped to develop this unnatural behavior.

If Allah (swt) said that the dog requires human affection and love to exist in this world, surely Prophet Muhammad (saw) would have advised us to keep dogs as pets. On the contrary, we are instructed not to keep dogs as pets and 'love' them as exemplified by the non-Muslims. Remember, our life should be structured and bound by the Qur'an and the beautiful example of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

Here are some hadith on this matter:

Sayyidna Abu Talha (Radhiyallaahu Ánhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or an animate picture. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith no. 2986)

Sayyidna Ibn Abbas (rah) reports from Sayyidna Maimoona (ra) that once Rasulullah (saw) became sad; and said that Jibra'eel (Álayhis Salaam) promised to meet him at night but did not turn up. "By Allah what has kept him back," said the Prophet (saw). Then he realised a puppy was under his bed. He ordered that the puppy be removed and the area be sprinkled with water. In the afternoon when Jibra'eel (Álayhi Salaam) came, Rasulullah (saw) enquired as to the delay. Jibra'eel (Álayhi Salaam) said that we, the group of Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or pictures. (Sahih Muslim Hadith no.3928)

In conclusion of these hadith and other narrations, it is not permissible to keep dogs as pets. If so, the home is deprived of the mercy of Allah (swt).

However, Jurists have stated that it is permissible to keep a dog for security purposes, farming and hunting.

The saliva of a dog is Najis (impure). If it touches the clothes or body, that portion also becomes impure and must be washed. Prayers are also said to be unanswered if a person (knowingly) has saliva of a dog on his or her person.

So, ladies... instead of opting for that cute little dog to get as a pet, get a cute little furry kitten! They are just as cute and cuddly and you will still be able to gain the rewards of your salah and get all of the blessings from the malaikah (angels), insha'Allah!

...And remember... We should all strive to make Allah our best friend. We should go to Him with our problems and questions first and foremost.

Ask M2M: Can a Muslimah wear heels?

Q: I've been told we as muslimahs are not to wear our feet out is this true? Are we allowed to wear heels(pumps,wedges)?

&

Sabeera asks:
Q: I and some sisters have a question about women wearing our feet out without covering your feet? Do you have to cover your feet?

A: We do our best to answer all questions. If there is a question we don't know the answer to we will do our best to provide daleel(Quran & Hadith) to answer the question. We have found the following information.

Scholars have differed regarding the feet of the woman: are they awrah in salah, or outside salah, or both or neither?

The Prophet (saw) was asked, when he mentioned the prohibition of dragging the lower garment, about what women should do with the ends of their garments. He said, ' They should extend them a span.' Umm Salamah said, 'Then, their feet will be uncovered!' He said, ' Then, they should extend them a cubit, not exceeding that.'
[ Tirmidhi ]

As far as wearing heels for the second part of Shadonna's questions;

And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their adornments (charms, or beauty and ornaments) except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their khimar (veils) over their bosoms and not display their adornments except to their husbands, their fathers .... and that they should not strike their feet so as to draw attention to their hidden (ornaments). (24:31-32)

Part of the reasoning behind heels being haram is that they make noise, flats can also make noise depending upon how one is walking in them/what the sole is made of.
It has also been said that wearing heels is dangerous for women because we may fall, they change the way we walk (making it more enticing to men )and they can also be a form of deceit making yourself look taller.
Narrated by Abu Sa’eed Al Khudri, Allah’s Apostle said :"A Jewish woman used to put two wooden legs to lengthen her shoes, so that no one could recognise her, for she was very short.”

As for M2M, we are very tall so we don't really wear heels, but when we have, we never fell or found ourselves to be in great danger because of them. It is possible that wearing heels can make your walk more enticing but if you don't know how to walk in them it can also make you look crazy. And as far as it being a form of deceit, where do you draw the line? A sneaker will usually give you a inch of height, so is that haram as well?

What it boils down to is your intentions when and/if you wear heels or shoes with height. Are you trying to put yourself in harms way, entice men or be deceitful? If you're wearing lime green six inch heels than you are most likely doing it to seek attention. There are plenty of super cute flats that are available that can be worn in place of heels. It's best to avoid anything that is a doubtful manner. Also, remember that intentions count for a lot when it comes to certain issues.

The Islamic Journey to Motherhood... Part 1

For those of you who know, my husband and I recently had our first child. Throughout my pregnancy and even before my pregnancy, I started to learn more and more about the Islamic traditions regarding childbirth. There are so many beautiful traditions and sunnah regarding this sacred time. I decided to share a few things that I learned to other Muslimahs out there. This series will be broken down into 4 parts: Conception, During Pregnancy, Labor and Delivery and Early Infancy.

Part 1: Conception

There are many things you can do to help to conceive a child. First and most importantly, it is necessary that you and your husband are good, practicing Muslims, because this is the foundation of the family and will help you to be in the right physical and emotional state for conceiving. You should both be observing the five daily prayers, fasting, and giving zakah according to your ability. Your income and that of your husband's should be from what is permissible, and not from the haraam, such as interest, or the sale of alcohol or pork.

As far as specific du'as for conceiving, there is no "magic bullet" du'a, of course, but here are some beneficial supplications from the Holy Qur'an:

"Rabbi la tadharni faradan wa anta khayru al-warithin."

Translation: "My Lord! Leave me not solitary (childless) You are the best of inheritors." (Al-Anbiya 89)

"Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibah innaka sami`ud du`a'

Translation: "My Lord! Grant me from You upright offspring, for You hear all prayers" (Al `Imran 38)

Recite these du'as frequently, and also make a habit of remembering Allah throughout your day with "subhanAllah" "alhamdulillah", and "Allahu akbar" and other authentic du'as.

There are also some "worldy" things you can do to increase the chance of conception. The first is to enjoy marital intimacy frequently. A woman is only fertile for a few days out of the month, so if you are intimate often, you have a better chance to conceive. You can purchase ovulation prediction kits (which use your body's temperature to determine when you might be most fertile) and you can keep track of your menstrual cycle to determine your fertile times. Also, RELAX! Marital intimacy should be enjoyable for its own sake, and if you are enjoying one another and not stressing over "having" to get pregnant, you will actually increase your chances, as stress hormones can interfere with pregnancy. There are many stories about women who finally got pregnant after they "gave up" trying and just resigned themselves to not having children.

Make sure also that you are not doing anything that will harm your health. If either of you smokes, stop now. The toxins from tobacco products can badly affect the man's sperm, damaging it and leading to infertility and potential defects in the fetus. Eat good healthy food, avoid processed foods, and maintain a healthy body weight. Exercise moderately. You should take a good woman's multivitamin or prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid to avoid a specific birth defect. Be sure to check the ingredients for gelatin prior to purchase.

As you see, there is a lot you can do to give yourself the best chance of conceiving. One thing to caution you about: you might receive superstitious advice from family members or acquaintances. Avoid any non-Islamic advice and hold to the Qur'an and Sunnah. InshaAllah, you will be blessed with a child who will be well-mannered, beautiful, intelligent, healthy and pious.

Before intercourse, it is sunnah to recite a du'a (prayer) to protect any offspring from Shaitan (the devil) such as the following:

"Bismillāh Allāhumma jannibnash-shaytān wa jannibish-shaytāna mā razaqtanā"

Translation: In the Name of Allāh! O Allāh! Protect me from satan and protect what You bestow upon us from satan.

If this is recited prior to intercourse and a child is conceived, it is destined that Shaitan will never be able to harm it.

Once a woman has confirmed her pregnancy, she should express her gratitude before Allah Ta'ala as this is indeed a great bounty of Allah Ta'ala. Gratitude may be expressed in the following dua:

"Allahummâ Lakal Hamdû Wa Lakash-Shukru"

Translation: O Allah! All praises are due to You alone and I express my gratitude unto You alone (for granting me the honour of motherhood)

Future Plans for a Mosque in Ground Zero???

Plans to build a mosque two blocks away from ground zero have set off an emotional debate among area residents and relatives of victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Cordoba House project calls for a 15-story community center including a mosque, performance art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.

The project is a collaboration between the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative, both of which work to improve relations with followers of the religion.

The two groups presented their vision to part of the Community Board of lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.

Ro Sheffe, a board member who attended the meeting, said the project did not need to get the board's approval.

"They own the land, and their plans don't have any zoning changes," Sheffe said. "They came to us for our opinions and to let us know their plans. It was purely voluntary on their part."

The 12 members who were at the meeting voted unanimously to support the project. Community board members are appointed by the borough president and serve as advisers to the borough president and the mayor's office.

Daisy Khan, executive director of the Muslim society, described her vision of a center led by Muslims, but serving the community as a whole.

"It will have a real community feel, to celebrate the pluralism in the United States, as well as in the Islamic religion," Khan said. "It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies. It will counter the extremist momentum."

The need for the center is twofold, Khan said, because it will support the needs of the growing Muslim community.

"The time for a center like this has come because Islam is an American religion," Khan said. "We need to take the 9/11 tragedy and turn it into something very positive."

Sheffe said a community center for lower Manhattan residents is "desperately needed." The area was mostly commercial, Sheffe said, but as more people move downtown, the lack of residential amenities is a problem.

The project got mixed reviews from families and friends of September 11 victims.

"I think it's the right thing to do," said Marvin Bethea, who was a paramedic at ground zero. "I lost 16 friends down there. But Muslims also got killed on 9/11. It would be a good sign of faith that we're not condemning all Muslims and that the Muslims who did this happened to be extremists. As a black man, I know what it's like to be discriminated against when you haven't done anything."

Herbert Ouida, whose son was killed in the attacks, supports the project as a way to bridge cultural divide.

"I understand the anger, the bitterness and hatred, but it only generates more hatred," Ouida said. "Such a large part of the world has this faith, and to say anyone who has this faith is a terrorist, it's terrible."

Others decried the idea of building a mosque so close to where their relatives died.

"Lower Manhattan should be made into a shrine for the people who died there," said Michael Valentin, a retired city detective who worked at ground zero. "It breaks my heart for the families who have to put up with this. I understand they're [building] it in a respectful way, but it just shouldn't be down there."

Others such as Barry Zelman said the site's location will be a painful reminder.

"[The 9/11 terrorists] did this in the name of Islam," Zelman said. "It's a sacred ground where these people died, where my brother was murdered, and to be in the shadows of that religion, it's just hypocritical and sacrilegious. "

Our first Ask M2M question is from Kamilah, she asks:

Q: I'm 16 and was planning on waiting till marriage to wear a hijab, is that wrong?

A: Alhamdulilah we are happy to hear that you plan on wearing hijab. With that said you want to start observing hijab right away. You should start wearing hijab when you reach puberty. Abu Dawood narrates that `Aishah (raa) said: "Asmaa' the daughter of Abu Bakr (raa) came to see the Messenger of Allah (saw) wearing a thin dress; so Allah's Messenger (saw) turned away from her and said: O Asmaa', once a woman reaches the age of menstruation, no part of her body should be seen but this and that" and he pointed to his face and hands.

We have to be mindful that everything we do in this life should be fisibilillah(for the sake of Allah). Insha' Allah start wearing hijab now because it's what we are commanded to do by Allah(swt) as Muslimahs. You don't want to wait and do it because your married/for your husband.

Hijab is a source of protection for Muslimahs and it's something that once you start wearing it you will never want to go back. A good rule of thumb is to dress how you do for salah(prayer) all the time. If you cover for salah/to go to the masjid then this is how we should dress at all times.

Muslim Miss USA: Progress Or Immodesty?

Europe's burqa debate and a steady stream of media images showing veiled women have led to a widespread impression that all Muslims are obsessed with covering the female body.

It might be a surprise, then, that many Muslim Americans are toasting Rima Fakih, who made history on Sunday (May 16) by becoming the first Muslim crowned Miss USA.

Fakih, who donned a gold bikini and a strapless white dress for the pageant, will return to Las Vegas in August when she represents America in the Miss Universe contest.

"There's recognition among Muslims that this is not a traditionally Islamic way for a woman to dress," said Shahed Amanullah, editor at AltMuslim.com, a news and commentary website. "But in its own weird way, its progress."

Many Muslims are critical of beauty pageants as lewd and degrading to women. At the same time, Fakih, 24, is being hailed as a symbol of Muslim-American integration who shatters the stereotype of the cloaked and dour Muslim woman.

Fakih's family, which she said celebrates Muslim and Christian holidays, is from Lebanon. After living in Queens, N.Y., where Fakih attended a Catholic high school, the family settled in Dearborn, Mich., home to one of the largest Arab-American communities in America.

Now, Fakih is developing a fan base that includes not only Muslims who are less strict about religious dress-codes, but also those who don headscarves and watch what they wear.

"The crowning of Rima Fakih as Miss USA demonstrates the diversity of Muslims, not just in terms of ethnic diversity, but diversity of opinion and religiosity," said Tayyibah Taylor, editor and chief of Aziza, a magazine that caters to Muslim women, and always features cover models in headscarves.

"So often, people see Muslims as a monolithic group, and this shows that we're not all in one camp."

Laila Al-Marayati, of the Los Angeles-based Muslim Women's League, also said Fakih reflects the diversity in the Muslim- and Arab-American communities.

"It's true that many of us would not dress in a similar manner but, at least here in the U.S., it is a personal choice."

Other Muslims saw additional benefits to Fakih's coronation.

"People are so happy that the headlines about an Arab-American have nothing to do with terrorism," said Ginan Rauf, a progressive Muslim activist from New Jersey. "As a community, we're often targets of ridicule and hostility, so it's nice to see an Arab-American be the object of adoration."

But Fakih's victory wasn't welcomed by all Muslims.

Kiran Ansari, communications director of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, said beauty pageants degrade women, are un-Islamic and that Fakih does not represent Muslims well.

"The route she took to get this fame is not in line with Islam. A Muslim woman can be beautiful, but walking around in front of millions of viewers in a swimsuit, is not in sync with Islamic values," said Ansari.

The Quran speaks of beauty and demureness, saying that Muslim women should "lower their gaze and guard their modesty," and should not "display their beauty and ornaments." It also cautions women to "draw their veils over their bosoms." Read the rest of this article here.

Menstraution In Islam: General Info

Menstruation is a natural type of blood that flows at regular intervals from a woman’s uterus once a month. Allah(s.w.t.) has laid down certain rules in connection with this, as a concession to the woman, in consideration of her condition. Menstruation usually lasts 3 to 10 days and nights, varying from woman to woman. Most women have a regular number of days for their monthly menstrual period(on average every 26-35 days). The number of days may fluctuate and the period might come a little early or a little late. So when a woman sees menstrual blood, she should consider herself to be menstruating. When it stops, she should consider herself clean. If more blood appears after her menstrual period has ended, but does not have the same color as menstrual blood, it should not be considered as menstruation. Some women may have abnormal bleeding which different from your menses.

A woman who is in her monthly cycle CANNOT:

1. Perform the five prescribed prayers (prayers missed due to menstruation do not have to be made up)

2. Touch the Quran,

3. Make tawaf around the Kaba,

4. Fast (Days of fasting missed during Ramadan may be made up within the next lunar year)

5. Engage in sexual intercourse with her husband (kissing, hugging, and other intimate touching outside of the genital area is okay).

A woman who is in her monthly cycle CAN:

1. Make dua,

2. Listen to a recitation of the Qur'an, or silently recite it to herself

3. Celebrate the praises of Allah,

4. Study Islamic texts, including hadith,

5. Attend Eid celebrations(not to pray Eid prayer but witness it)

When your menses is finished:

When your cycle is ended, then you must perform the ritual purification bath, called ghusl. It includes washing your entire body, including the head. Click the link for more info/details on how to make ghusl.

Naseeha(Advice)

It is often difficult for new Muslimahs to understand why they are suddenly unable to make salah for five days or so. Many may feel that it is a limitation on them due to their gender. Others may misunderstand this, and think that they can not engage in any Islamic activities for the duration of their menses. This is simply not so. Many women suffer from extreme cramps, heavy bleeding, nausea, headaches, and other maladies during their cycle. It is truly a sign of the Mercy of Allah(s.w.t) that we are excused from prayer during this time.

Islam does not ask you to give up your spirituality or pursuit of Islamic knowledge during this time either. While it is true that you can't read the Quran physically, you aren't prohibited from listening to tapes of the Quran, or from listening to someone else recite it. You can still pray, through Dua, and you can still celebrate the praises of Allah(s.w.t) during this time as well. There is nothing to stop you from reading Islamic texts outside of the Quran, including hadith.

South Park Depicts Prophet Muhammad(saw) in Cartoon!

Fans of the popular series South Park are waiting for tonight’s episode after it was revealed the episode will include a portrayal of the character of the Muslim prophet, Muhammad.

The controversy started in 2005 when a Danish newspaper ran a series of comics where an image of Muhammad was shown. It raised protests in the middle east where Muslims burned Danish embassies in Syria, Lebanon, and Iran.

This is not the first time the creator of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, produced episodes including Muhammad in the character. In July 4, 2001 an episode entitled Super Best Friends successfully aired with the prophet depicted.

People are waiting if tonight’s episode will be really aired or canceled.

The episode aired April 15, 2010 and depicted Prophet Muhammad in a bear suit and speaking funny. Anderson Cooper aired his story tonight on CNN. In Muslimah2Muslimah's experience of reverts to Islam, we think the transitions of one's thoughts, opinions, and behavior, in fact a whole transformation of one's perspective in life is very interesting.

The negative image presented about Islam since 9-11 here in the states has really given Islam a bad name due to the media as well as people's lack of understanding. The stereotypes about the treatment of women has been rampant in the media for many years with the Taliban and other "extremist" groups. We thought it would be interesting to interview Kizzy, who in the midst of all propaganda has warmly embraced Islam and get her Muslimah's Perspective on Islam...

Muslimah 2 Muslimah: What is your name?

Kizzy Craig

M2M: What made you become interested in Islam?

Kizzy: My first encounter with a muslimah is what made me interested, when i spoke to her i realised that she was not beaten, oppressed, uneducated and she was full of vigour and vitality and an acute fashion sense, at the time i was what you would call a diva extraordinaire and did not want to let go of what I identified as me (acrylic nails, funky hairdos, latest trends etc) I realised she had none of these things and still i envied what she had which was a peace that was within, and even without all these additions she was the most beautiful person i had ever come across.

M2M: What does your family think about your decision?

Kizzy: Everyone is pretty ok with it i guess, they ask a lot of questions and i am happy for that. Every opportunity i get i try to educate them more and more without being a bug (lol)

M2M: What types of reactions have you gotten from your friends or coworkers?

Kizzy: Friends have been supporters ( i have only got 5 friends whose opinions really matter) the acquaintances i'm not concerned about- my party friends dont ask me to go out with them anymore -- (Wonder why LOL!!) I guess after the first 50 times or so of asking they got tired of hearing that I'm not into that anymore. Co workers are okay i see them for 8 hrs and then go home so they don't have much of an input.

M2M: How has Islam changed your life?

Kizzy: I am more at peace with myself, I have more time for family, my kids, i understand my place in society more, i am more in tune with God and the responsibility i have as his servant and i have a greater appreciation for how great Allah is i see his fine handy work around everytime.

M2M: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in Islam?

Kizzy: Go brave!! The sooner you make this step the faster things would flow in your life for you. Start giving back to Allah in your speech your actions its not enough for the things he does for us. Allah (swt) is most merciful and gracious the walk is not easy but its made easy for us. Things just seem to fall into place when we obey his commands and carry out his will.

M2M: Islamically, women are required to wear a hijab. Others say that you must also cover your face(niqab). What are your thoughts on this?

Kizzy: I wear hijab (i work in an Anglican school so I wear a head wrap and tie a bun in the back for work) and i know wearing the hijab is compulsory and i do " cover up" in dress and actions hijab is not just the piece of wrap or pretty fabric we wear its the way we carry ourselves too . For me I have not explored the option of niqab and dont know if i ever will ( I'm taking it all one step at a time). For the sisters who wear niqab mashaallah. For me hijab is quite fine. I love the hijab ( its my will, and choice and my way of submission to Allah)

M2M: How did you feel the first time you wore hijab?

Kizzy: An unbelievable sense of inner peace, peace of mind, fulfillment, gratitude towards Allah (swt) Its an indescribable feeling. I am happy I made the decision to.

M2M: What is your opinion on the common labels associated with Muslims ("terrorists", "extremists" , etc.)?

Kizzy: Just talk for me. I know better. Individuals jump on the bandwagons and say nasty things but... Alhumdulilah Allah gives us the strength to persevere. Some wrong things have been done and unfortunately individuals have not been blamed independently and a religion has been ridiculed, hatred has been perpetuated and our religion allowed to be the brunt of jokes and insulting captions because of this, but Allah is the Judge of all and knows best.

M2M: What is your view on the impression that many non-Muslims have that Islam oppresses the women and the women have no voice in their communities?

Kizzy: I am not oppressed, many sisters I know are not oppressed but i guess when you break the mold of what is deemed right you will always come under close scrutiny and judgement is very easily made.

M2M: The media tends to give very negative views on women and many non-Muslims base their views solely on this. What was your view on Islam and the treatment of women before you converted to Islam?

Kizzy: I thought all the things that all non muslims think, i saw a woman in niqab and wondered why she would allow a man to do this to her, saw a woman in hijab and wondered why she had subjected herself to this. I was so disgusted by some of these sights that i decided there must be a reason why they would want to go "against the grain" and do something that was so unlike the world today, wear loose clothes, long clothes, cover their heads etc then i fell hard for the values and principles that were and still are today ISLAM and was "picked up" and carried by Allah (swt). The love and appreciation for 1 GOD. I started reading to gain knowledge and information and ended up taking shahada.

M2M: How has Muslimah2Muslimah helped you along your journey to Islam?/ How have you benefitted from Muslimah2Muslimah?

Kizzy: Its a beginners guide i searched long and hard for a new shahada sight and bounced up on Muslimah2Muslimah by accident. I have learnt a lot from this site. And prayer Allah's richest blessing on my sisters.

Muslim Women to Look Up to : Hazrat Umm-e-Habibah

Hazrat Umm-e-Habibah (Radi’Allahu Anha)

Her name and lineage

Her first name was Ramlah and her surname was Umm-e-Habibah (Radi’Allahu Anha). She was the daughter of Abu Sufyan and her mother’s name was Safiyya Bint Auld Aas who was a real paternal aunt of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

Marriage to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)

Her first marriage was to Obaidallah Bin Jahash, they both accepted Islam together and migrated to Ethiopia. On reaching there, Obaidallah became a Christian and also asked Ramlah to become a Christian. She however, refused to leave Islam. After her Iddat, the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) sent Amr Bin Umayya Zamir to the Negus (Ruler of Ethiopia) to arrange the marriage of Ramlah (Radi’Allahu Anha) and the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). In the evening, Negus gathered all the Muslims and read out the formal sermon of marriage. At the time Umm-e-Habibah was 36 or 37 years old.

Features and Character

Umm-e-Habibah (Radi’Allahu Anha) was extraordinarily beautiful. Her father, Abu Sufyan himself said, ‘In my estimate the most handsome of Arab women and the most beautiful amongst them is Umm-e-Habibah (Radi’Allahu Anha)’. In the Traditions book, as many as 65 Ahadith are attributed to her.Before the fall of Makkah, her father Abu Sufyan went to visit Umm-e-Habibah. He wanted to sit down on the bedding of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), but Umm-e-Habibah did not allow her father to sit on this as he was yet an unbeliever. Abu Sufyan was infuriated. She said, ‘You are a polytheist and hence unclean. This is a pure, clean bedding of the Holy Prophet’. Abu Sufyan retorted, ‘You have been spoilt a lot in my absence’.

She was also meticulous in acting upon the Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). She had heard from the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), that whoever among the believers offered twelve Rak’ats of supererogatory prayers (Nawafil), that person shall have a palace in Paradise. She said, ‘I persisted in offering these twelve Rak’ats daily’.

Her Death

Umm-e-Habibah (Radi’Allahu Anha) died at the age of 73 years in the year 44AH, during the Caliphate of her brother Amir Mo’awiya. She was buried in a house of Hazrat Ali (Radi’Allahu Anhu) in Medina. At the time of her death, she called Aisha (Radi’Allahu Anha) and Umm-e-Salmah (Radi’Allahu Anha) and said, ‘Whatever unpleasantness happens to take place among co-wives, it also took place among us. I request you to forgive me any such unpleasantness’. Aisha (Radi’Allahu Anha) said she forgave her and prayed for her salvation. On this day, she said, ‘You have pleased me (by ready forgiveness). May Allah please you!’

"The Black Widow Bombers"

More than 50 people were killed and another 100 injured in suicide bombings this week in the Moscow metro and in a town in the turbulent North Caucasus region of Dagestan, raising fears of a new bombing campaign against the Russian heartland.

Photographs of a young woman, obtained by Reuters from a law-enforcement official in Dagestan, showed her dressed in a black hijab and holding a grenade.

Another photograph showed the woman holding a pistol. The same photograph was published in the Kommersant newspaper on Friday.

The source, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue, named her as Dagestani-born Dzhennet Abdurakhmanova, the widow of 30-year-old Umalat Magomedov, a prominent insurgent killed by Russian forces on December 31.

Abdurakhmanova also used the name of Dzhanet Abdullayeva, the source said.

Magomedov, who was shown in the photographs holding a pistol, styled himself as the "Emir of the mujahideen of the Vilayat Dagestan," a local Islamist group, the source said.

The Russian Prosecutor-General's main investigations unit later identified the same woman as the bomber.

"A native of Dagestan, Dzhanet Abdullayeva, born in 1992, detonated explosives at the Park Kultury metro station," it said in a statement, giving no further details.

Officials said two female suicide bombers -- known in the Russian media as "Black Widows" -- killed at least 40 people on packed Moscow metro trains during the rush hour on Monday.

The first bomb tore through a metro train just before 8 a.m. as it stood at the Lubyanka station, close to the headquarters of the FSB. A second bomb was detonated less than 40 minutes later in a train waiting at the Park Kultury metro station.

The suicide bombings in Moscow and Dagestan follow a surge of violence over the past year in the patchwork of North Caucasus republics, where Russia has fought two wars against Chechen separatists since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union.

Muslimah2Muslimah: What is your name?

Leanne Dillard

Muslimah2Muslimah: What made you become interested in Islam?

Leanne: I never really thought about Islam a lot, even after 9/11 ( I was only 16 and at that age who really cares about global politics). Then when I meet my future husband, he spoke about it a little but was not really religious and then after we got married, he decided to following Islam more closely, mashallah and of course I began to ask questions because I have always been really interested in other cultures/religions and he gave me a Quran and I read it and was amazed at how similar it was to the Bible and everything started from there.

Muslimah2Muslimah: What does your family think about your decision?

Leanne: First I will start with the fact that my family is very religious and I was brought up very religious, Southern Baptist to be exact. Now my family is somewhat understanding; however, in the beginning they were not. A lot of that I believe is my fault because I did not explain to them my feelings and thoughts I went from going to Church on Sunday to being Muslim on Friday so it was quite out of the blue to them. Also, I did not explain Islam to them very well and coming from a small town in the Deep South, they had never been exposed (except the media) to Islam. After being honest with my family about my thoughts on God and religion, they understand at least and actually I feel much closer with them because we can have these types of conversations now. My advice to any future convert is that you need to be honest and open with your family, you might be the one converting but especially if you are going to wear hijab it affects your whole family so they deserve to be part of the process.

Muslimah2Muslimah: What types of reactions have you gotten from your friends or coworkers?

Leanne: I was lucky in that my close friends understood and are still my friends today. Of course, being a good Southern Baptist I never really associated myself with people that would think otherwise. A small fraction of people I work with were upset, mainly about my openly admitting I did not drink. I never really drank before but admitting it out loud was considered a faux pa in a small college town. Overall, the reactions were all good.

Muslimah2Muslimah: How has Islam changed your life?

Leanne: How has my life not changed? I feel much more relaxed and at peace with myself now, than I ever did before. I never truly understood the “trinity” so I never felt fully satisfied with my relationship with God because I did not understand it. Alhamduliah, now I feel that everyday has a purpose and that God has truly wonderful plan for me.

Muslimah2Muslimah: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in Islam?

Leanne: Read, Read, Read. The more you know the better informed you will be and do not take this decision lightly. It took me almost a year of reading and learning before I felt comfortable making that decision and it was really hard. I spent many nights crying to God to give me answer so that I could follow my heart but also stay true to my family.

Also, you need to be honest and open with your family, you might be the one converting but especially if you are going to wear hijab it effects your whole family so they deserve to be part of the process. You cannot hide a scarf on your head ;-). But even if you outwardly do not look any different, it is an emotional roller coaster and your family can help you along the way even if they are a different religion.

Muslimah2Muslimah: Islamically, women are required to wear a hijab. Others say that you must also cover your face(niqab). What are your thoughts on this?

Leanne: I personally, do not cover my face. Women that do, especially in a Western country, may god bless them. But for me I do not feel it is mandatory. However, I feel hijab (covering the hair) is necessary, but at the same time this is not mean that women who do not wear niqab or hijab are any less deserving of God’s humanity than those of us that do.

Muslimah2Muslimah: How did you feel the first time you wore hijab?

Leanne: Terrified, honestly. I actually postponed my shahaadah for several months because I was terrified about wearing it but also felt that if I was a Muslimah that I had to wear it, how ironic. And I did get some harsh looks, I even do today a year and a half later but it is all worth it. Every time I get asked what country I am from (by the way I have a horrible southern accent, thank you Georgia!) it makes me laugh and makes it all seem not so important in the scheme of life!

Muslimah2Muslimah: What is your opinion on the common labels associated with Muslims("terrorists", "extremists" , etc.)?

Leanne: I recently read an article on CNN.com that mentioned that the recent attacks on the IRS building, etc. if they had been committed by a Arabic/Muslim they would be called terror attacks. Obviously, this is very unfair to all of us. I personally, except being searched at the airport, while my Christian co-worker (also from Georgia) went straight through (another mark it up as a hilarious moment), have never had to deal with such prejudices.

Muslimah2Muslimah: What is your view on the impression that many non-Muslims have that Islam oppresses the women and the women have no voice in their communities?

Leanne: That they have yet to meet me! LOL I pride myself in being obedient to my husband but I am a very outspoken gal! I am working on PhD in a largely white-male dominated field and find these characteristics necessary to be successful. Most westerners do not understand the difference between oppression and being obedient. They are not the same thing and as Muslimahs in the US it is our job to show them that we are not oppressed but very bright and beautiful (on the inside) women.

Muslimah2Muslimah: The media tends to give very negative views on women and many non-Muslims base their views solely on this. What was your view on Islam and the treatment of women before you converted to Islam?

Leanne: Honestly, I had no view. As I said earlier I never really paid attention to global politics.

Muslimah2Muslimah: Has your view changed in any way?

Leanne: I consider myself a feminist and especially, after I meet my wonderful Muslim friends I could never believe Islam would allow such treatment and today believe that Islam actually gives women more rights than Christianity. The hijab actually makes me feel liberated.

Muslimah2Muslimah: How have has Muslimah2Muslimah helped you along your journey to Islam?/How have you benefited from Muslimah2Muslimah?

Leanne: Just knowing there are other hijabis and especially American hijabis is very comforting. Being in a college town, all my friends are from other countries and I love them but I needed to know there were others with light skin, blue eyes, and a bad southern accent out there. And mashallah I have felt a special connection with the blog and the other readers. We are all in this journey together.

The Difference between Zakat and Sadaqah

This is a brief post to make a clear distinction between zakat and sadaqah. Zakat is often confused for sadaqah(charity) while the two are completely different.

Zakat

Zakat, which is the 3rd pillar, is Islam means growth/purification. Zakat is a fundamental part of Islam. It is a purifying act that is good for the economy as a whole. It's important to mention that it's not a tax system where everybody pays some expenses in return of the public service that the government offers. It is not either a system of social insurance where the rich pays some installments to guarantee some services in cases of any damage.

The philosophy behind this act has multi dimensions. Al-Zakat considers that rich people's properties are not absolutely theirs. Unless they pay the rights of the poor, they are considered transgressors. It is also a yearly reminder of the fact that what we earn and what we have is not really ours. It is a gift from God. We shoulder certain responsibility towards this gift. Because socially and legally, what we have is ours, we are prone to get attached to what we have and forget that we are just passing by. Al-zakat emphasizes that fact indirectly. The awareness of that dimension protects the individual human being from feeling superior. This awareness may even raise feelings of overall responsibilities for what seemingly are her/his properties.

"And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the Way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty. On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, "This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried!" (At-Tawbah: 34-35)

There are two types of . Zakat Fitr is a one payment that is made once in every calender year at any time between the first day of the month of Ramadan and the first day of Shawaal. All Muslims are obligated to pay this, regardless of their age, status or wealth. The amount of zakat payable is approximately 3kg of staple food in the relevant country or an amount of money that is equivalent to the price of the food. Zakat al-Mal is an annual payment based on the amount of wealth owned by a Muslim individual or organization.

Sadaqah

Sadaqah is a voluntary act of giving alms/charity fisabililah(for the sake of Allah). Sadaqah is not limited to giving of money or part of our wealth, every Muslim can therefore earn rewards from Allah. Sadaqah is an easy way to increase our iman. Every Muslim whether poor or wealthy can give sadaqah at all times. Sadaqah can come in many shapes and forms i.e. a smile, a kind act, cooking a meal, etc.

“The likeness of those who spend for Allah’s sake is as the likeness of a grain of corn, it grows seven ears every single ear has a hundred grains, and Allah multiplies (increases the reward of) for whom He wills, and Allah is sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower).” (Qur’an, 2:261)

“Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret and in public have their reward with their Rabb (only God and Sustainer). On them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.” (Qur‘an, 2:274)

“…that which you give for charity, seeking the Countenance of Allah, (will increase); it is those who will get a recompense multiplied.” (Qur’an, 30:39)

Muslimahs Refuse "Naked" Full Body Scan at Airport

Two Muslim women have become the first passengers to refuse to subject themselves to controversial 'naked' full body airport scans, it emerged today.

The pair - who security officials insist were selected at random - opted to miss their flight to Pakistan and forfeit tickets worth £400 each rather than be screened.

One of the women refused to go through the full-body scanner at Manchester Airport on religious grounds while her companion also declined for 'medical reasons'.

The women were travelling together to Islamabad when they were selected to pass through the controversial security screen after checking-in at Terminal Two at the airport.

An estimated 15,000 people have already passed through the scanners, with the pair the first passengers to refuse a scan.

Both told airport staff they were not willing to be scanned. They were warned they would not be allowed to board the Pakistan International Airlines flight if they refused.

The pair decided they would rather forfeit their £400 tickets and left the airport with their luggage.

The £80,000 scanners were introduced at Heathrow and Manchester airports on February 5.

The X-ray machines allow security staff to see a 'naked' image of passengers to show up hidden weapons and explosives, but it has attracted criticism for also showing clear outlines of passengers' genitals.

Manchester Airport confirmed the passengers had refused to be scanned but said it had received no complaint from the women.

However, civil liberties campaigners say the incident could form the basis of a legal test case to challenge the use of the Rapiscan device in airports.

Last month, Transport Secretary Lord Adonis stressed that an interim code of practice on the use of body scanners stipulated that passengers would not be selected 'on the basis of personal characteristics'.

Two weeks ago, a week after the scanners were introduced at Manchester and Heathrow airports, Islamic scholars in the U.S. said Muslim travellers should not pass through the scanners because they violate religious rules on nudity.

The Fiqh Council of North America issued a fatwa, or religious ruling, warning Muslims not to go through the scanners.

‘It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women,’ read the order.

‘Islam highly emphasises haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts.'

In the U.S., there are now 40 scanners in 19 airports and could be as many as 450 by the end of the year.

The powerful council of ten scholars that issued the fatwa is affiliated with the Islamic Society of North America.
